Crew Resource Management
Crew Resource Management, CRM, is a management system,
using all available resources (technics, procedure, operational sequences and all persons involved) in an optimized way.
Thus increases the effectiveness, decreases error frequency and finally increases the security rate.
The defined aim of CRM is effective and safe work with the team.
Background of CRM
75% of all accidents are caused by humans. With Crew Resource Management, CRM, this number could be reduced. In aviation, this was achieved by the introduction of appropriate training.
CRM considers non technical skills of humans:
- Ability to cooperate
- Identifying of dangers
- Appropriate decisions to avert dangers
These skills can be divided into four areas:
- Cooperation
- Leadership
- Situational Awareness
- Decision Making
Communication is the heading of all these skills.
Summary
Even with CRM, all errors will never be eliminatated. Errors are a necessary result of the natural limits of human beings in a complex system.
CRM is a tool which can be used for recognizing and optimizing errors.
